  • A project for Culture House in Kudirkos Naumiestis | Interwar architecture
it was thought of to create an object which in nowadays terminology would be called a multifunctional public residential complex However the project is interesting not only for its function On one hand we can see yet another unfinished interesting and original example of Lithuanian modernism in a province city while on the other the information remains about how the idea was developed and it allows to understand the social and political lifestyle of those days From a vivid letter of Kudirkos Naumiestis mayor Zigmantas Skirgaila addressed to the director of Municipalities department we can have a rather live view of those days city s updates Unfortunate consequences for our city s cultural development which had been forming for a number of years weakened the city so much that the Municipality and the Government s special support cannot coordinate the most primitive conditions for city s cultural development Eeach year a number of tourists not only from Lithuania but also from Germany visit the city each year we attract an international borders investigation commission and we have no sufficient place to host them Organizations the shooters young Lithuanians firefighters and others also have no housing places We do not have

the bank in periodic press at that time clearly alluded to the new modernist aesthetics Indoor workrooms need to be bright and let in enough air and heat All other requirements for the building were considered to be of secondary importance Primary focus was on hygiene and cleanliness of the premises Nevertheless aesthetic quality of architecture was still inspired by ornamentation Its absence could only be explained by the intention

  • Antanas Gylys Hospital Building | Interwar architecture
began teaching at the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at Vytautas Magnus University A Gylys left the university in 1934 and built a modern hospital where he began providing private medical services The hospital was one of the most modern institutions of its kind in Lithuania having a luxurious hydro helium and physiotherapy division packed with machines and equipment The division provided therapy and treatment of nervous disorders The modernity of the medical equipment went neck and neck with that of the building s architecture according to non conclusive data it was designed by architect Leonas Ritas Despite being built on one of the most modern streets of Kaunas at that time the building still stood out because of its asceticism and functionality The facade was spiced up by an asymmetric shape of the building One characteristic of the urban culture was the viewing platform on the top floor under the roof which overlooked V Putinskis Street and the New Town During the Soviet period there was also a health institution located up there Quite a lot of the original interior has still survived until today including a fully functional Swiss elevator Schindler Vaidas Petrulis Architects Leonas Ritas Owners Antanas

  • Apartment House for Workers and Civil Servants | Interwar architecture
Ko However the construction did not begin during the Lithuanian independence period The final draft was approved following the start of the first Soviet occupation on 17 August 1940 Judging from the press of that time we can guess that the first project was slightly adjusted according to the new design requirements set forth by the apartment construction division of the Construction Department of the Ministry of the Interior of that time Under these requirements the so called residential unit was to include multifunctional facilities ranging from laundry warehouses for wood and hideouts to cultural facilities a nursery a kindergarten and commercial spaces The building was most likely completed in the first half of 1941 before the beginning of WWII A house of 40 apartments is an interesting and a quite rare example which shows how Soviet Lithuania picked up architectural ideas from interwar Lithuania It is also one of those rare examples of pre industrial Soviet residential construction during the first occupation In 1940 there were plans for a quite extensive pre industrial residential construction campaign which was to include Vilnius five houses of 24 apartments Šiauliai two houses of 24 apartments Jurbarkas four houses of eight apartments Panevėžys
