    liquidity and significantly lower costs are needed for their operation The conference objective was to introduce sustainable real estate development tendencies in the World and in the Baltic States and to spur the interested real estate developers building owners office tenants investors architects and designers and representatives of construction business industry and public sector to share their knowledge and valuable experiences and to establish new business contacts The event attracted 200 attendees from construction and real estate sector in all Baltic States The following issues were discussed What is the existing situation of sustainable real estate development in the Baltic States and worldwide What stimulates the construction of green buildings and why is it worth What are the short term perspectives for real estate developers investors and construction business representatives architects and designers What are the international certification systems of real estate sustainability What are they needed for and what building assessment standards are the best applicable for the Lithuanian market What was the development of BREEAM or LEED certified commercial real estate projects like Why is it important to focus on sustainable real estate development principles throughout all stages of a building lifecycle throughout the building design construction and operation The conference was opened by Arvydas Avulis Chairman of the LGBC Board and Daiva Matonienė Vice Minister of Environment of Lithuania The conference moderator was Martynas Babilas Head of Office advice Baltics NEWSEC The presentations were given and discussions took place in the English and Lithuanian languages on the basis of simultaneous translation Presentations tackling the principles of sustainable real estate development in the process of buildings design construction and operation use were made by the globally recognized experts from Europe and the USA among them Martin Townsend CEO of BRE Global Garth Rockcastle professor at the University of

    at the University of Minnesota He is the author of several essays and reviews of art and architecture and an editor of three published collections of essays on contemporary theory art and architecture As a design professional Rockcastle focuses on cultural facilities sustainability and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings exemplified by several of his recent projects the conversion of a 150 000 SF factory in the heart of Amsterdam NL into a innovative office research Headquarters for Bugaboo B V a 1973 Venturi Scott Brown designed commercial building into the College of Media Arts and Design for Drexel University in Philadelphia a former public high school into an Arts Union for Carleton College in Northfield MN and over 750 000 sf of derelict Navy Yard buildings in South Philadelphia for the Urban Outfitters Corporate Campus In addition he is now leading a design team of diverse experts forging an innovative design of a Net Zero 100 acre creative community in reclaimed iron mining land in Northern MN The project will feature the region s first 20 MW solar array and wind turbines to support existing civic uses in nearby Chisholm MN along with new enterprises attracted to the vision of the new community Rockcastle cultivates using the combination of his academic and professional perspectives on architecture to benefit public environmental and client insights as he moves from his practice to academic research roles testing probing and expanding his diverse applied and theoretical interests and insights TOMAS PLAUŠKA Project Manager Sustainability at Consolis the Netherlands TOMAS PLAUŠKA in 2007 obtained his MSc degree with commendation at Kaunas University of Technology in Civil Engineering specialization Building Structures In 2005 he started at Consolis subsidiary Betonika to gain experiences in structural design and engineering of precast concrete structures In 2008 Tomas Plauška moved to The Netherlands to join Consolis Building Development Centre where from the start he has been involved in various international research development and innovation projects Since 2009 he is developing his knowledge in terms of sustainability and environmental assessment systems monitoring sustainability related international standards and emerging trends and translating them into internal guidelines Since 2010 Tomas Plauška holds a BREEAM International Assessor license Last year he attended an extensive course at PHI and gained the know how on the design and development of world wide known Passive House buildings Currently Tomas Plauška is managing projects on precast green buildings and precast thermally activated flooring systems He is constantly following and sharing the best practices of sustainable development of buildings EVALDAS SAVICKIS CEO of the Lithuanian Green Building Council sustainable development consultant and BREEAM AP Lithuania EVALDAS SAVICKIS specializes and has a rich experience in sustainable property development consulting Being the very first licensed BREEAM International Assessor and BREEAM In Use Auditor he actively assists leading real estate development organisations sucessfully implementing sustainable strategies and certifying buildings according to the international assessment standards In 2012 he has lauched a consulting company Vesta Consulting which provides a set of BREEAM
