age and color hints me to this expectation Malts of Scotland is a really reputable bottled acclaimed by amateurs and professionals So that is true I get chocolate monster and I need a pause Leather lots of chocolate and bit of citrus fruits extreme mix but is a wonder for genre lovers 4 th has the same age as previous malt And colors are very similar I make a pause with plenty of water in hand third malt gave me almost unlimited finish Well we have similar malt very similar With notes of leather and chocolate If a lover of old very woody cognacs would be interested to go extreme with malt whisky I would get him try this one Oldest and last one for today With good pause again So good it is like wrap up for today sherried malt notes with lots of elegance sherry chocolate notes create nice harmony here they are mellowed a bit and mature fruitiness comes along very nicely It is obvious that active powerful sherry cask overwhelms delicate whisky spirit and turns it to sherry monster And times does a lot to mellow it again that whisky spirit can open up and come back It s like with good wine you need a time when it breaks it s tannins shell and gentle fruit can come up So when you re up to looking for a extreme you don t need something old Just take first fill sherry cask matured malt and you have it It will mellow with time other notes will come up And my experience shows that regular Glengoyne expressions and their single cask releases are so far one from another I love latter ones intense full of flavor But it s had to find them for decent price nowadays while regular expressions aren t impressive enough for my taste 1937 Strathisla tasting and comparison with more modern old sherried malt like Glendronach 2015 04 6 published by Povilas Such a moment is really important to me I was about to try oldest malt I ever had by vintage This is inter war Strasthisla 1937 even my dad wasn t still born Comparison is always important especially tasting serious stuff in my opinion So I should find something worth a sparring with Strathisla In my humble samples selection I still had Glendronach 1972 Good reasons to choose it it is also sherry matured malt I think Strathisla also could be vatted from malts coming mainly from sherry casks If not they have very similar age 38 and 40 Anyway I have 2 very nice malts from very long time ago and more modern one If whisky from 1972s can be called modern I m starting from Strathisla as it is bit weaker in strength and more like slightly more delicate Freshness is pleasant I had expectation to get more damp one Elegant notes of honey fruits and berries Palate is bit weak what isn t surprising for so old malt

week our club had fantastic regular event All our members were present In addition to that we have had very interesting guest from Angus Dundee Jimmy Robertson who is also hosting whisky tastings in Kaunas W1640 and Vilnius King and Mouse whisky bars this week Angus Dundee owns Tomintoul and Glencadam distilleries and also Islay malt from Secret distillery called Smokey Joe They also deliver some indie bottlings under the name of Mackillop s Choice We had a nice chance to try 3 different new makes unmatured whisky spirit and to compare them We had Tomintoul Glencadam and Old Ballantruan smoked Tomintoul malt It is always interesting to try finding the differences in the aroma And in the taste also I have tried to taste them all Spirit from Tomintoul is robust more powerful while that one from Glencadam is more delicate and gentle When we later had 21 year old versions from both distilleries tasting notes one day I could distinguish the same differences gentle and robust in mature whisky Then for the great finish we had Tomintoul 1976 Jimmy Robertson presented us some stories from his current job at Angus Dundee but also from his past adventures while working with Johnnie Walker when it was still under United Distillers ownership and Morrison Bowmore Bowmore Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch distilleries It was always nice to know or confirm the perception why whisky spirit is so various event excluding peated malts Shape of the pot still fermentation time how worth is mixed with warm water how much pot still is filled etc evertyhing has slight influence to the final spirit that we sip enjoying afer many years For sure time and oak has the most influence but every whisky spirit matures differently and these differences are somehow still felt after long cask ageing Another pleasant surprise we had Our member Laurynas had a trip in the USA where he had a chance to visit St George distillery This distillery despite it s bourbon making in addition with some interestingly strange spirits like distillate from orange blossoms or from the oysters yes did some single malt batches in the past Laurynas after several tries to find it in different stores finally found that one and took home to us to Lithuania I should post tasting notes soon also Burn Stewart Distillers has new owners 2013 04 16 published by Darius Burn Stewart Distillers the owner of such Scotch whisky brands as Bunnahabhain Tobermory Black Bottle and Scottish Leader has changed hands Just recently it was acquired by South African company Distell for 2 2 billion rands 160 million pounds This was an extension of the previous relationship between the companies they were partners in marketing Black Bottle Scottish Leader and Bunnahabhain in sub Saharan Africa This is actually the second large international acquisition for Distell last time it bought French Cognac producer Bisquit Apparently more and more international conglomerates appear from less known countries Let s just hope that the quality

transfer and people there say I cannot pas with it either I come back make my check in somehow and put it on my luggage or I can drink it before I leave The answer is no because bottle is bought at the airport outside EU and that means they do not accept that despite the bottle is in the sealed stamped bag I was to tired and wanted go home so decided to give up And bottle was put into trash bin Airport staff was polite enough so I barely resisted to offer them to buy it from me or to take as a gift hope they did it after their shift otherwise something living in the streets or dump area will be happy I m warning you my whisky friends in Europe don t know how s elsewhere if you have transfer flight to home and you start outside EU it s better to save money Buy your whisky at airports inside EU Second story is that my mood was cheered up by parcel from China I had made order before vacation to some chinese tea directly from there They came unharmed and happy I will make some reviews and posts about tea maybe in the future Good drink whether whisky or tea is always a good drink Whisky Fair Limburg 2013 06 24 published by Povilas One whisky fellow malt maniac Keith Wood calls this fair as a best whisky event for a advanced whisky anorak I can agree for that selection you can find Either you are looking for rare old bottlings either for recent releases but mostly for independent bottlings You can find almost everything there then So the format of this fair is bit different what I would usually expect It s hard to find here official distilleries booths but you can find many whisky rarities shops with tremendous offerings There were well known Whisky Antique they also own Silver Seal Italian independent bottler some also very known local german shops standings The other rest were occupied by independent bottlers many from Germany for obvious reasons like local The Whisky Agency their owner Carsten Ehrlich is main organizer of Whisky Fair Limburg Whisky Fässle Malts of Scotland and the rest Other interesting point is that you pay 10 EUR only for the entrance and every dram costs something They can pour 20ml or 40ml if you want and you will pay what you will get Prices are fair and affordable for sure So this event is a great occasion to try rare expensive malt which bottle costs too much to acquire I had some whishes for my taste some silent distilleries Banff Caperdonich Port Ellen I always wanted to acquire old real Macallan so I did I was also lucky to spot Glenugie so I didn t bother to consider it s rare whisky distillery was functioning not for a long time Acquire Yes indeed I wasn t going to try as much as I can I was going to work to fill my 50 small bottles I was bringing with myself I wanted to bring them home for being able taste them and put my notes in a proper manner that anyone would be able to read my notes later on So I did my best to fill all bottles and 3 additional ones as some people were already used for such people as me buying samples to bring back home Thanks for this great idea Keith Several photos from event and great bottlings I could spot One of the qeues to the event not the biggest one Typical booth Booth of well know German rarity malts shop My lovely Signatory bottlings Macallan 1956 Glenugie 1967 Glendronach 1972 Bowmore 1973 Worth mentioning Limburg is small nice town with great old town and several great bars Another great thing Limburg has one of the best whisky bars in Europe Villa Konthor I never saw so many whisky bottles in one place Their web site claims they have more than 700 whisky sorts You can believe that If there is no place bottles are just placed on the bar And ordering whisky is simple not by the menu You have to find the bottle you want by yourself bring it to the bar and they will pour it to you They also have nice German beer I had great time there with my fellow Stefan and his relatives And there is my two days work result Does age matters Some dencent young malts from Islay 2013 03 1 published by Povilas Age always matters when You know what You want It helps to choose more easily The more you try the more easier you can understand different between differently aged malt what type of cask gives what How each malt change by maturing Like significant wood notes wood old books sawdust oak cedar tannins are more often the sign of long ageing smoky character is a sign of relatively young age and peated malt which vanishes with time usually During ageing there vaiours chemical processes and oxidation what changes mellows malt character during the years and brings some new notes So age is not either good or bad It is more important to understant the mix of cask type maturing time and distillery character Want some sherry bomb for a decent price It s not necessary to take some oldie it s enough to choose malt matured not finished in a good sherry cask Glenfarclas and Glendronach are usually good examples Want some fruits Some young Speysiders also can be good for You For sure it depends what fruits are You looking for With age some fuits become more ripe or dried sherry case or even become more delicate exotic I never forget fantastic exotic fruits bouquet in White or Gold Bowmores So knowledge sometimes help to choose more wisely what you want to try or sip one day or another But when you want

anything else Longmorn 16 Year Old NO It is nicer alone than like this Spicy fruity whisky is not a good pair with powerful whisky Let s go with Talisker Briny smoky and peppery whisky compliments this cheese really well This pairing is really interesting the combination becomes even more salty spicy and pungent In a good sense Both components amplifiers each other but doesn t not overpowers Peppery pleasantly bitter and spicy aftertaste The taste of cheese is very present and Talisker helps to shine it even more In my experience very good pairing Talisker 10 Year Old YES Great pairing without any flaw Let s take another good and potential candidate Lagavulin Experience is similar as with Talisker bet there is additional dimension almond liquorice notes adds up with more spice Maybe too bitter for me But aftertaste is very good salty and spicy with those roasted salty almonds Pleasant enough but it is not so good as with Talisker maybe I drank to much Absolute win versus Longmorn but on the par with Talisker And bit different Interesting pairing really there were some additional notes like the effect of great combination It is more sweet and more full the most complex I am not even sure I understood it completely I really took too much whisky maybe Talisker was more enjoyable probably Lagavulin 16 Year Old YES but this time Talisker is my favorite This pairing is very rich maybe too much of taste for me Whisky and food no 2 Wild and brown rice with Talisker 10 and Yamazaki 18 2012 09 2 published by Povilas After first not so good attempt Bowmore with beef steak I would like to try something vegetarian with something robust and with something bit lighter but complex enough So what we have here now This time let s take Talisker 10 Year Old and Yamazaki 18 year old and let s try to balance it with simple food Simple but very nice my all time favorite dish This time I take brown rice mixed with wild and red rice from Camargue swampy are in south of France well known for its salt rice and bulls I mix rice with friend in a butter ognion and carrot I enrich it with Grana Padano and seeds pumpkin and cedar nuts with some strong spice Let s take Talisker first First impressions hm not bad could be very good one Salty smoky whisky suits well bit sweet oily rice with oily seeds and spice Good balance overall Power of Talisker adds some kick to simple but rich food With water whisky not food Even better Talisker saltiness goes down and it swims even better now I don t want to write a lot I just want to eat instead typing this on my pc Talisker 10 Year Old YES Worth trying not bad at all Didn t disappoint but there is room for better candidate We will try onother then Now it is
